Newsletter January 2011

Juliet Jenkin, after many years of stalwart work at the CGMP, has severed her links with the programme. On the 25th November The Redruth 2000 Management Committee appointed Mike Kiernan as Director of the programme and Dennis Martin as Assistant Director.  Exciting plans are being implemented and details will appear in future newsletters.

The regular team at our offices in Murdoch House now consists of Mike, Dennis, Alan, Liz and Patti. But we would like to increase our active numbers. Below are set out brief volunteer opportunities.

  1. Digitising & cataloguing a collection of Photographic slides. We have a devise for copying slides into a computer where they need labelling and then an entry made into an excel programme.
  2. Cataloguing our book, pamphlet, periodical collection using excel.
  3. Designing & constructing shelving system to accommodate books etc. as catalogued in 2 above. Subject to permission from the Management Committee on the use of the Attic floor & expenditure. Also there is always a few basic do-it-yourself jobs need doing!
  4. Inputting information into the CGMP migration database.  Some knowledge of access preferable, but if willing to learn then no problem.
  5. Answering questions from ‘Cornish Cousins’ from around the world. A knowledge of the CGMP database (we can tell you about this) and family history research would be helpful.
  6. Research – obtaining information for inputting into the database. This may be through using outside facilities such as The Cornish Studies library, in fact anywhere with access to newspapers and other publications or original resources, census records, passenger lists, company records and so on.  This opportunity does mean you do not even have to reside in Cornwall, if fact we would love associates in all continents, countries, States, counties and towns of the world. We can discuss what your interests are and how the data you gather can be submitted to us (preferably through the use of excel) but good old fashioned written records are always acceptable.

These are only suggestions. If you are interested in helping with any of these projects or have your own thoughts then do please contact us.

Our offices at Murdoch House are open 9.30 to 12.30 every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. If you wish to visit, we can open at other times.
