The Cornish Global Migration Programme at Murdoch House

The aim of the Cornish Global Migration Programme is to chart Cornish global migration worldwide. The Programme is run by a dedicated group of volunteers who ensure that the information they gather about Cornish emigration is readily available.

Dr. F. L. Harris’s idea to record all Cornish emigrants to America commenced in 1991 with the name The Cornish American Connection. He enlisted Moira Tangye to head a select team of people to research and analyse Cornish emigration to the United States.

America played only a small part in the emigration story and latterly the Cornish Global Migration Programme was formed to try and paint a complete picture of the Cornish emigration and the way that it affected the world.

Cornish pioneers went to every corner of the world, Australia, South Africa, Canada, America, New Zealand, India and South America to name just a few.  Many of the places were not ideal and they often worked in extreme conditions i.e. jungles, the outback, frozen temperatures and high altitudes.

The Cornish trades that left, covered all spectrums of working life, the carpenter, the farmer, the preacher, the shopkeeper and of course the miner.  The Cornish miner was considered to be the finest hard rock miner in the world.

From information received, the Programme is able to link families around the world with common ancestors.  The programme is supported by Cornish associations worldwide and at home, as well as many institutions in Cornwall.

The Cornish Global Migration Programme is funded solely by public donation. Please make your cheque payable to Cornish Global Migration Programme and send to the address below.  Cheques which are not drawable on a UK account are very costly to pay into our bank account. International transactions, especially for small amounts, are probably best processed through PAYPAL. If you would like to use this method please contact us for further details.
